External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday spoke with his Canadian counterpart Anita Anand, with the two leaders discussing bilateral cooperation and the situation in Ukraine.
“Good to speak with FM Anita Anand of Canada this evening, on our bilateral cooperation as well as on the Ukraine situation,” Jaishankar posted on X.
The conversation comes amid renewed momentum in India-Canada relations, with both countries working to strengthen institutional engagement and cooperation across multiple sectors.
Earlier this month, India and Canada held their annual Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) in New Delhi. The talks were led by MEA Secretary (East) Rudrendra Tandon for India and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arun Thangaraj for Canada at Hyderabad House on September 2.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the consultations were held against the backdrop of sustained momentum in bilateral ties since June 2025, reflected in increased high-level exchanges and progress across several areas.
Both sides reaffirmed the importance of India-Canada relations, anchored in shared democratic values, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a commitment to the rule of law.
The two countries reviewed cooperation in energy and critical minerals, science and technology, education, security and defence, culture, people-to-people ties and consular matters. They also welcomed progress in strengthening institutional dialogue between the two governments.
India and Canada reiterated their commitment to concluding negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement before the end of the year. The two sides have set a shared objective of more than doubling bilateral trade to CAD 70 billion, or around Rs 4.65 lakh crore, by 2030.
Economic engagement has also gained momentum. Last month, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said India and Canada had an opportunity to deepen financial-sector cooperation and build long-term investment partnerships, highlighting the complementary strengths of the two economies.
Addressing an India-Canada Business Roundtable in Toronto alongside Canadian Finance and National Revenue Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne, Sitharaman said India brings scale, growth and opportunities, while Canada offers long-term capital, institutional depth and expertise.
