The family of Ramanuj Goswami, accused in the murder of his wife Riya Talukdar, has refused to take custody of his body, alleging that he was “encountered” and announcing plans to seek legal remedies over the circumstances surrounding his death in police custody.
Goswami’s father, Tarun Goswami, said the family would neither travel to Guwahati to receive the body nor approach the police for its handover.
“We are not going to take back his dead body. My son has been encountered. Now everything is finished,” Tarun Goswami said, adding that the family would pursue the matter through legal channels.
He said the family plans to approach the Gauhati High Court and, if necessary, the Supreme Court over the circumstances of Goswami’s death. He also appealed to the public and media to refrain from visiting the family’s residence and requested privacy.
Police, however, have denied that Goswami was shot. According to the police, he allegedly jumped from a police vehicle near Narakasur Hills while being taken from the Hatigaon area towards Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for a blood test at around 3 a.m. on Monday. He allegedly sustained fatal injuries in the fall.
GMCH authorities said Goswami was brought to the casualty ward at 3:41 a.m. as a road accident victim and was declared brought dead.
GMCH Superintendent Debjit Choudhury said immediate tests, including an ECG, were conducted as per protocol, while the exact circumstances of death would be established through a detailed post-mortem examination.
The hospital authorities also said the preliminary examination found no bullet injury on Goswami’s body, contradicting reports and social media claims that he had died in police firing. His body, which had several tattoos with inscriptions that were not clearly readable, was subsequently kept in the hospital morgue for post-mortem.
Goswami had been arrested in connection with the murder of his 25-year-old wife, whose body was recovered from their residence in Guwahati’s Basisthapur area earlier this month. Police had alleged that Riya was killed following an argument and that Goswami subsequently severed her head and kept it inside a refrigerator.
The case came to light after neighbours detected a foul smell from the locked apartment and alerted police.
During his custody, Goswami reportedly made contradictory statements. He initially expressed no remorse and allegedly threatened to kill a man he referred to as his wife’s “sugar daddy” if released from prison. Days later, he reportedly expressed remorse and urged others not to repeat his actions.
