Veteran actress Saira Banu remembered late star Sadhana on her 85th birth anniversary on Wednesday, describing her as “one of the finest artists of Indian cinema” and recalling her timeless contribution to Hindi films.
Saira took to Instagram to share a series of throwback photographs featuring herself with Sadhana and other celebrated stars, including Raj Kapoor and Mala Sinha.
“In loving memory of Sadhana on her birthday. One of the finest artists of Indian cinema, and a presence of rare warmth and grace,” Saira wrote in her tribute.
She also highlighted Sadhana’s performances in classics such as Woh Kaun Thi?, Mera Saaya and Waqt, describing her work as timeless.
Sadhana made her first screen appearance in an uncredited role in Shree 420, released in 1955. She subsequently starred in Sashadhar Mukherjee’s Love in Simla, where her distinctive fringe hairstyle became hugely popular and was famously known as the “Sadhana Cut”.
She went on to establish herself as one of Hindi cinema’s leading actresses with films including Parakh, Hum Dono, Asli-Naqli, Ek Musafir Ek Haseena, Mere Mehboob, Woh Kaun Thi?, Arzoo, Waqt and Mera Saaya.
In 1974, Sadhana made her directorial debut with the crime thriller Geetaa Mera Naam before stepping away from acting. Her final screen appearance came in Ulfat Ki Nayi Manzilein, released in 1994. She died in 2015 at the age of 74.
Saira Banu herself remains one of the celebrated names of Hindi cinema. She made her acting debut with Junglee in 1961 and rose to prominence with films such as Shagird, Diwana, Sagina, Ayee Milan Ki Bela, Padosan, Hera Pheri and Gopi. Her final film before retirement was Faisla in 1988.
Married to legendary actor Dilip Kumar, Saira Banu also worked as a producer on the Bhojpuri film Ab To Banja Sajanwa Hamaar. She continues to be remembered for her contribution to Hindi cinema and her enduring screen presence.
