At least seven people have died and several others are missing after sudden flooding in the Bhote Koshi River hit Nepal’s Rasuwa district on Wednesday, triggering large-scale search and rescue operations.
According to local media reports, the Nepali Army said at least 25 people had been rescued by Wednesday afternoon. The Nepali Army, Armed Police Force (APF) and Nepal Police have been deployed for rescue operations, with 14 helicopters pressed into service.
Four APF personnel posted at a border outpost in northern Rasuwa have also gone missing following the sudden flooding. APF spokesperson Deputy Inspector General Netra Bahadur Karki said the personnel had been out of contact since the flood struck the area near the Nepal-China border.
Karki said the border post itself had not been damaged, but authorities were yet to ascertain whether the missing personnel had been affected by the flooding.
Local media also reported that 14 employees of the Rasuwa customs office were unaccounted for, although those reports had not been confirmed. Nepal Police officials separately said 32 personnel were out of contact, according to Kantipur Television.
The flooding has also caused significant damage in neighbouring areas. The Himalayan Times reported that around 60 houses near Trishuli Bazaar in Nuwakot were swept away, while two motorable bridges were damaged.
Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah held discussions with federal parliamentarians from affected districts, including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan, to assess the situation and coordinate rescue and relief efforts. The discussions covered the extent of damage, the condition of settlements in vulnerable areas and ongoing relief operations.
Earlier, Shah convened a meeting of the National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management to review the latest situation in flood-hit areas and assess the progress of search, rescue and relief operations.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and relief of affected citizens and directed concerned agencies to maintain heightened vigilance in low-lying areas and immediately move displaced people to safer locations.
Search and rescue operations remain underway, with authorities continuing to assess the extent of the damage and the number of people affected.
