Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said the dispute between Pakistan and the United States over US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor’s remarks on Kashmir was a matter between the two countries.
Abdullah was responding to questions about Pakistan summoning the US envoy in Islamabad and lodging a protest over Gor’s statement that Jammu and Kashmir is an important part of India.
“Whatever the US ambassador said, he said. Now it is between the two countries,” Abdullah told reporters.
Gor made the remarks on Wednesday while speaking to reporters after meeting the J&K Chief Minister. He also indicated that the United States would reconsider its travel advisories concerning Kashmir, while describing Kashmir as an important part of India.
Hours after the remarks, Pakistan’s Foreign Office summoned the US envoy in Islamabad to formally lodge its protest.
Gor’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir was his first since taking charge as the US Ambassador to India. Before the meeting, Abdullah had said he intended to discuss issues with the visiting envoy but would not use the interaction to lodge complaints, arguing that matters concerning J&K were for the Central government to address rather than the US.
Gor is a graduate of George Washington University, where he was involved with conservative causes, including the College Republicans, and founded the university chapter of the Young America’s Foundation.
He was an activist in Arizona Senator John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign and subsequently worked for the Republican National Committee. He later served as spokesperson for Representatives Steve King, Michele Bachmann and Randy Forbes.
In May 2013, Gor joined Kentucky Senator Rand Paul’s political action committee, RANDPAC. He subsequently served as Paul’s spokesperson, communications director and deputy chief of staff.
