Music composer Anu Malik has recalled the making of the popular song ‘Tumse Milke Dilka Jo Haal’ from ‘Main Hoon Na’, revealing that veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar wrote its lyrics in just 30 seconds.
An old clip from music composer Nakash Aziz’s podcast has resurfaced, in which Malik spoke about how the song came together and credited filmmaker Farah Khan for the idea behind it.
According to Malik, Khan asked him to compose a qawwali for the film. He initially found the assignment challenging but eventually created the composition in his own style.
Recalling Akhtar’s reaction, Malik said the lyricist was initially angry after hearing the tune and questioned whether it was meant to be a joke. Malik then sang a phrase from the composition, after which Akhtar asked Khan whether it was a piece of music. When Khan told him that he had to write lyrics for it, Akhtar quickly got to work.
“He wrote it angrily. He took 30 seconds for that,” Malik recalled.
The composer said the intention was not merely to create a song that audiences would enjoy temporarily, but one that would have lasting cultural value.
“It’s not that the song came, we listened to it, it was fun and we left. The song should stay. The song should go down in history,” Malik said.
‘Main Hoon Na’, released in 2004, marked Farah Khan’s directorial debut and starred Shah Rukh Khan, Sushmita Sen, Zayed Khan, Amrita Rao and Suniel Shetty.
Set against the backdrop of the India-Pakistan peace initiative Project Milaap, the film blended action, romance, comedy, family drama and patriotism. Its colourful college setting, memorable soundtrack and larger-than-life treatment helped it emerge as one of the defining commercial entertainers of the 2000s and later attain cult status.
‘Tumse Milke Dilka Jo Haal’ remains among the film’s best-known musical numbers.
