Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor has credited composer Anu Malik and playback singer Kumar Sanu for creating some of the most memorable music of the 1990s, saying their work not only shaped the era’s leading men but also gave its heroines enduring musical moments.
Karisma, one of the prominent actresses of the decade, recalled several films and songs that became closely associated with her career while expressing gratitude to both artistes.
Speaking about Anu Malik on the dance reality show India’s Best Dancer, Karisma praised the composer for his work in films including Judwaa, Khuddar, Haseena Maan Jaayegi, Krishna and Biwi No. 1, among others.
“Anu ji has done such great movies ‘Judwaa’, ‘Khuddar’, ‘Haseena Maan Jaayegi’, ‘Krishna’ and ‘Biwi No. 1’ and many more,” she said.
She then recalled Kumar Sanu’s contribution to some of the popular songs featured in her films, mentioning tracks such as “Tum Sa Koi Pyara”, “Duniya Mein Aaye Ho Toh Love Karlo”, “Main Toh Raste Se Ja Raha Tha” and “Pucho Zara Pucho”.
“And Kumar da, from ‘Tum Sa Koi Pyara’ to ‘Duniya Mein Aaye Ho Toh Love Karlo’, ‘Main Toh Raste Se Ja Raha Tha’, from the beginning of my career to ‘Pucho Zara Pucho’ such legendary songs!” Karisma said.
Reflecting on the musical landscape of the 1990s, she noted that voices such as Kumar Sanu’s became synonymous with the films and leading actors of the period.
“Their voices were synonymous with the movies and all the heroes in the 90s, which benefited us heroines as well. Thank you so much for being here,” she added.
Karisma’s remarks highlighted the enduring influence of the music of the 1990s, when playback singers and composers played a significant role in shaping the identity of Hindi cinema and its stars.
