Veteran actress Jaya Bachchan once revealed that it was her husband, megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who objected to her continuing to work in films after their marriage, prompting her to step away from acting while their children were young.
An old clip from filmmaker and television host Karan Johar’s chat show Koffee With Karan has resurfaced online, in which Jaya opened up about the circumstances behind her decision to take a break from her successful acting career.
During the conversation, Johar asked Jaya whether the decision to stop working came entirely from her, particularly as she was at the peak of her career and had delivered several successful films.
Jaya explained that Amitabh had told her he did not want a “9-5 wife”. However, as his own professional commitments grew, she felt that one parent needed to be at home with their children.
The actress also recalled an emotional moment involving their daughter, Shweta Bachchan Nanda. Jaya said that she had begun preparing for a film shoot at home when Shweta asked where she was going. When Jaya told her she was leaving for work, Shweta reportedly asked her not to go and instead suggested that “Papa” could go.
Recalling the moment, Jaya told Johar that it was then that she decided to step away from acting, describing the experience as “terrible”.
Amitabh and Jaya married on June 3, 1973, in a private ceremony attended by close family and friends. The two had developed a relationship after working together in films. According to accounts attributed to Amitabh, the couple decided to marry after the success of Zanjeer.
They have two children — daughter Shweta, born in 1974, and son Abhishek Bachchan, born in 1976. Abhishek later followed his parents into the film industry.
Jaya subsequently returned to acting and has continued to appear in films and other projects over the years.
