Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor will take oath as a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly on Monday, formally beginning his tenure as an MLA following his victory in the Bankipur Assembly by-election.
The oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for 10.30 a.m. in the office of Bihar Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar in the Assembly’s main building.
According to a letter issued by the Deputy Secretary of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, Kishor has been asked to appear at the designated time and place to take the oath or make the prescribed affirmation.
Kishor became the first elected MLA of the Jan Suraaj Party after defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha in the Bankipur by-election. The victory marked his first electoral success since entering electoral politics and provided a major boost to the relatively new political outfit.
Polling for the Bankipur seat was held on July 30, while votes were counted on August 3. Kishor maintained his lead throughout the counting process and won by a margin of 19,324 votes.
He secured 64,151 votes, while BJP’s Neeraj Kumar Sinha polled 44,827 votes. RJD candidate Rekha Gupta finished third with 14,273 votes.
The result ended the BJP’s long-standing hold over Bankipur, a constituency the party had controlled since 1995. Kishor’s victory was therefore seen as a significant political upset in a seat traditionally regarded as a BJP stronghold.
With his oath-taking, Kishor will become the first legislator elected on a Jan Suraaj Party ticket, giving the fledgling party its first representation in the Bihar Assembly.
The Bankipur bypoll result has drawn considerable attention in Bihar as Kishor seeks to establish the Jan Suraaj Party as a political force in the state.
