A 16-year-old boy was seriously injured in a stabbing outside a restaurant in Albany Creek, north of Brisbane in Australia’s Queensland state, with police arresting another teenager in connection with the incident.
The Queensland Police Service (QPS) said officers were called to reports of an altercation involving two teenage boys outside the restaurant at about 8:15 p.m. local time on Thursday.
When police arrived, they found the 16-year-old with knife-inflicted lacerations to his abdomen. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Local media reported on Friday morning that his condition was life-threatening.
A 17-year-old boy was arrested at the scene and was assisting police with their inquiries.
The incident comes amid several recent stabbing cases involving teenagers in Australia.
On August 4, police said a teenager had been arrested following a stabbing at a shopping centre north of Sydney that left an 18-year-old man in critical condition.
Emergency services were called to the shopping centre, located about 80 km north of Sydney, at around 3:45 p.m. on August 3. Paramedics treated the victim before he was airlifted to hospital in critical condition.
Police established a crime scene and launched an investigation. A knife was later seized from a nearby property, while a 15-year-old boy was arrested on August 3.
The teenager was taken to a local police station and charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
In another case, a 15-year-old boy was charged with murder on August 1 over the fatal stabbing of a 22-year-old man on the Central Coast of New South Wales (NSW).
NSW Police said the teenager and a 45-year-old woman were arrested at a home on the Central Coast, about 75 km north of Sydney, following an investigation into the July 28 stabbing.
Emergency services responding to the incident found the 22-year-old with stab wounds. He was treated by paramedics but later died in hospital.
The 15-year-old was charged with murder, while the 45-year-old woman was charged with hindering the apprehension of a person who committed a serious offence.
