Veteran midfielder Manpreet Singh is determined to help India win a maiden men’s Hockey World Cup medal, acknowledging that the 2026 edition could be his final appearance at the global tournament.
The FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 offers India an opportunity to end a 51-year wait for the men’s title. India last won the World Cup in 1975 and will be aiming to add a second crown after securing back-to-back Olympic medals at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.
For Manpreet, a World Cup medal remains the major achievement missing from his career. The 2026 tournament will be his fourth World Cup.
“This World Cup means a lot to me because it’s my fourth edition. We have won back-to-back Olympic medals, but a World Cup medal is still missing,” Manpreet told JioStar.
“Every player dreams of having both. For me, this could be my last World Cup, so I am approaching it with that mindset. I am determined to achieve what we haven’t yet,” he added.
The former India captain said the current squad possesses the experience and ability required to challenge for the title and credited the team’s preparation for its confidence ahead of the tournament.
Manpreet also stressed the importance of treating every opponent seriously while maintaining high fitness levels and improving India’s defensive structure.
“I have full faith in this team. Our squad has a good balance of youth and experience,” he said, adding that senior players, including captain Harmanpreet Singh, Mandeep Singh and himself, had shared their experience with younger teammates.
He said every match would require the right approach, with the team needing to respect every opponent and play to win. He also highlighted the importance of fitness and a strong defence in competing against the world’s best teams.
Manpreet praised Harmanpreet’s leadership, describing him as a captain who leads by example and remains composed under pressure.
“Harmanpreet is an exceptional captain. He leads from the front and guides everyone on the field. He motivates the players during tough moments and keeps the team calm under pressure,” he said.
Manpreet also praised Harmanpreet’s game-reading ability, passing range, defensive organisation and drag-flicking skills, saying his presence gives the team confidence.
With India targeting a deep run in the tournament, Manpreet said he was confident the team could reach the final.
“I am confident that we will reach the final of the World Cup. The team is playing with great belief and giving 100 per cent in every single training session,” he said.
“The energy in the camp is high, and every member of the squad is determined to achieve something special. I fully believe we will make it to the final,” he added.
