The Pakistani national, identified as Wahab Alam alias Rana Raut, was arrested from Habra in North 24 Parganas district. Following information gathered during his interrogation, STF personnel arrested another suspected associate, Muhammad Izaz, from the Topsia area of East Kolkata.
Investigators suspect that Izaz served as a key local contact for Alam. However, STF officials have not disclosed details of the operations, including the exact timing and circumstances of the arrests.
Preliminary findings suggest that the two were allegedly in contact with ISI operatives. Sources familiar with the investigation said there are indications that Alam is a Pakistani citizen, although authorities are still working to establish his nationality conclusively and determine the purpose of his activities in India.
Investigators are also examining Izaz’s nationality and his alleged links with Alam and Pakistan. Further questioning is expected to shed light on the nature and extent of the suspected network.
The latest arrests come amid a series of STF operations against suspected terror-linked networks in West Bengal and neighbouring states.
On July 30, the STF arrested suspected Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) associate Hamim Mondal from Burdwan town in East Burdwan district. His alleged associate Arpita Srakar was arrested the same night from Sahibganj in neighbouring Jharkhand.
Earlier this month, STF personnel arrested Mondal’s alleged second associate, Aditya Singh alias Raj, from Kolkata.
According to investigators, both Mondal and Srakar had links with the Shahzad Bhatti Network (SBN), a Pakistan-based terrorist-criminal group. The STF has alleged that SBN, through Srakar, targeted family members of at least six serving West Bengal Cabinet members for alleged honey-trapping and blackmail.
The agency also claimed that documents relating to the schedule and movements of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari were recovered from Mondal.
The investigation into the latest arrests and their alleged connections is continuing.
