Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday rejected Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s offer for a debate on the police action against students during the July 20 Parliament march over the NEET paper leak issue, saying the Opposition wanted accountability rather than “lectures”.
Speaking to reporters on the Parliament premises, Gandhi said the Opposition and the younger generation wanted answers on who ordered the alleged use of force against the protesting students.
“Kharge ji and I have held press conferences, and the other Opposition parties have also made it clear that we are not interested in listening to Amit Shah’s imagination; we are not interested in him giving us a lecture,” Gandhi said.
He alleged that students were subjected to firing and lathi-charge and asked, “Who shot those students? Who blinded one of the students? Who gave the order to beat the students with lathis?”
Gandhi also questioned the media over its coverage of the issue, saying journalists frequently interrupted Opposition leaders but did not similarly question the government.
“You keep interrupting us, always. Do you interrupt them when he speaks? Why don’t you ask questions to him? The whole media stands before him like a mouse,” he said.
Gandhi said the Delhi Police comes under the Union Home Ministry and argued that Shah should take responsibility for the police action.
“Did Mr Amit Shah give this order to shoot our children or did he not? If he did, then he should resign because he is culpable. And if he did not, he should resign because he is incompetent,” he said.
The Congress leader also accused Shah of avoiding Parliament and claimed that the Home Minister lacked the courage to face the Opposition in the House.
His remarks came shortly after Shah said the government was ready for a detailed discussion on the students’ protest and that he was prepared to answer every question. Shah had also proposed that the discussion could continue from Wednesday afternoon until Thursday afternoon if the Opposition submitted a request to the Speaker and allowed Parliament to function.
The Opposition has repeatedly sought Shah’s presence in Parliament and a statement on the police action against students. The issue has contributed to repeated disruptions during the Monsoon Session.
