Celebrated singer Sonu Nigam has revisited his Haryanvi roots with his latest track ‘Chunni’, sharing how his connection with Haryana influenced his approach to the song during an exclusive conversation with IANS.
For Sonu, Haryana has a deeply personal significance. He was born in Faridabad, where his sister was also born, while his father spent his entire childhood there.
“Whichever place God chooses for us as our birthplace, there must be a reason behind it. There must be some connection. So, out of all the places I got the great fortune to be born in Faridabad, Haryana. My sister was also born there, and my father’s entire childhood was spent in Faridabad. So, naturally, Haryana is an extremely special state for us,” he told IANS.
The singer also recalled growing up around Haryanvi-speaking friends during his school years. While he could understand the language, he said he did not use it extensively himself.
“Back in school days, a lot of my friends were also Haryanvi, so we grew up hearing the Haryanvi language a lot. We were always able to understand the language, but did not use to speak it much. But for the song, we were required to speak the language in a proper manner,” Nigam said.
He credited lyricist and composer Aamin Barodi for helping him get the nuances of the language right for the track.
“Aamin Barodi, who has written the lyrics of the track, he has great knowledge of music, along with a good thought process. So I requested him to help me with the details,” he added.
‘Chunni’ is a romantic Haryanvi track featuring Sonu Nigam and singer Renuka Panwar. Written and composed by Aamin Barodi, the song’s music video features actor Charmee Zaveri.
