Thousands of people, including women, farmers, agricultural labourers and Anganwadi workers, took part in a statewide ‘Jail Bharo Andolan’ in Tripura on Monday, with police detaining more than 12,000 protesters at 21 locations across the state.
The agitation was jointly organised by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) and central trade unions in support of an 11-point charter of demands, including opposition to the Centre’s economic, agricultural and labour policies.
CPI(M) leaders in Tripura claimed that more than 30,000 farmers, agricultural workers, women workers and Anganwadi workers participated in rallies across the state as part of the nationwide programme.
A police spokesman at the State Police Headquarters in Agartala said the protests remained peaceful and no major untoward incident was reported. “More than 12,000 protesters, including women, were detained at 21 locations across all eight districts of Tripura and were later released,” he said.
CPI(M) politburo member and state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury, former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and senior Left leaders Pabitra Kar, Manik Dey, Rama Das, Agore Debbarma and Shankar Dutta led demonstrations at different locations.
Addressing protesters in Agartala, Sarkar accused the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre of pursuing “autocratic, dictatorial, anti-constitutional and anti-people” policies. He warned that Left parties would intensify protests if the government failed to change course.
Chaudhury, who is also the Leader of Opposition in the Tripura Assembly, alleged that the state had witnessed “lawlessness and widespread corruption” instead of development over the past eight-and-a-half years. He also claimed that unemployment and inadequate livelihood opportunities had created a severe crisis in remote and tribal areas.
SKM state convenor Pabitra Kar said the nationwide programme had been held at more than 1,000 locations and alleged that farmers were facing an economic and social crisis.
Kar accused the government of failing to honour its commitments on remunerative crop prices and alleged that farmers continued to face shortages of fertilisers, seeds, pesticides and irrigation facilities.
He also claimed that farmer indebtedness was rising while corporate entities had benefited from loan waivers worth Rs 16 lakh crore.
The Left leaders described Monday’s protest as a warning to the government and said larger agitations could follow if their demands were not addressed.
