India cricketers Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep have formally joined the Bihar Police after being appointed as Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) under the state’s policy for direct recruitment of outstanding sportspersons.
The appointments followed a notification issued by the Bihar Home Department under the Bihar Direct Recruitment of Outstanding Sportspersons (Amendment) Rules, 2026, based on recommendations of a high-level selection committee constituted under the policy.
Both cricketers reported for duty at Bihar Police Headquarters in Patna on Monday, marking a new phase in their careers after representing India at the international level.
A special induction ceremony was organised at the police headquarters to welcome the two newly appointed officers. Bihar Director General of Police Vinay Kumar felicitated Mukesh and Akash Deep and welcomed them into the police force.
Inspector General of Police (Headquarters) Manoj Kumar and several other senior police and administrative officials were also present at the ceremony. The officers congratulated the cricketers and wished them success in their new responsibilities.
The state government’s direct recruitment policy is aimed at recognising outstanding sporting achievements and encouraging accomplished athletes to enter public service.
Mukesh Kumar made his international debut for India in a Test against the West Indies in July 2023. He subsequently represented the national team across all three formats — Tests, One-Day Internationals and T20 Internationals.
Akash Deep made his India debut in Test cricket against England at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on February 23, 2024. He has since emerged as a promising fast bowler on the international circuit.
Both players, known for their pace bowling, will now combine their sporting experience with their new responsibilities as police officers in Bihar.
