Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat is set to address a major gathering of Hindu Americans in New York City on August 29, marking one of his relatively rare public appearances in the US.
The event, titled Universal Oneness Celebrations, will bring together Hindu cultural, spiritual, community and service organisations from across the country, according to the organisers.
The gathering will coincide with Raksha Bandhan and focus on themes including unity, civic responsibility, social harmony and interfaith understanding.
Organised by American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD Forum) in partnership with hundreds of participating organisations, the programme has been described by organisers as one of the largest and most diverse Hindu community gatherings in the US.
Bhagwat, who has headed the RSS since 2009, is expected to deliver the principal address. Organisers said his participation is likely to draw considerable attention as he rarely addresses large public gatherings in the United States.
The programme will also feature faith-based speakers and cultural performances centred on the theme of universal unity. Details regarding other speakers, the venue and the timing are yet to be announced.
Organisers said the gathering comes amid growing discussions in the US on social cohesion, pluralism, civic participation and interfaith understanding. It will also highlight the contributions of Hindu Americans to education, healthcare, business, public service, philanthropy and civic life.
The event will promote the Indian philosophical principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, or “The World Is One Family”, as a framework for dialogue, mutual respect, shared responsibility and service.
Participants are expected to represent diverse linguistic, regional, cultural and organisational backgrounds. The organisers said the programme would demonstrate how communities can come together around common values while retaining their distinct traditions.
Raksha Bandhan traditionally celebrates the bond between siblings and the responsibility to protect and care for one another. According to the organisers, the New York event will broaden that theme to encompass relationships among communities, nations, humanity and nature.
Community leaders, entrepreneurs, doctors, educators, lawyers, artists, elected representatives, veterans, youth leaders, faith leaders and volunteers are expected to attend.
Delegations are also expected from temples, yoga organisations, educational institutions, service groups, linguistic and regional associations, cultural bodies and interfaith organisations from across the US.
