Abhishek Banerjee sends legal notice to Bengal Minister Agnimitra Paul

Kolkata, August 10, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Trinamool Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee has sent a legal notice to West Bengal Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul, accusing her of making allegedly incorrect statements to the media concerning his personal assistant Sumit Roy.

The notice, issued through Banerjee’s counsel Arka Kumar Nag, relates to remarks reportedly made by Paul about Banerjee’s efforts to protect Roy and his appearance before the Supreme Court seeking permission to travel abroad for medical treatment.

On Monday, a Supreme Court Bench allowed Banerjee, nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, to travel overseas for ophthalmic treatment.

Meanwhile, Roy, who had earlier been absconding, appeared before the West Bengal Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for the third consecutive day to face questioning in connection with an FIR relating to an alleged illegal land-grabbing case.

According to the legal notice, Paul had allegedly attributed a statement to Banerjee suggesting that Roy might have died. Banerjee’s counsel rejected the claim, stating that his client had never made such a statement or suggested any connection between Roy’s alleged death and his own request to travel abroad for medical treatment.

“My client reiterates and places on record that he has never made the statement attributed to him by you. My client has never stated that Shri Sumit Ray has died,” the notice said.

The notice called upon Paul to withdraw the alleged statement and issue an unambiguous clarification in the same public forum where the August 9 remarks were made.

It also asked the minister to ensure that information provided to her by officials or her department regarding Banerjee was properly verified before being made public.

The notice further stated that the clarification should clearly establish that Banerjee had never made the statement attributed to him regarding Roy’s death and sought a correction of what it described as incorrect information disseminated publicly.

The matter comes amid continuing political and legal developments surrounding Roy and the alleged land-grabbing case.
