Iran has said the Strait of Hormuz will not reopen as long as the United States continues what Tehran describes as a naval blockade, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei linking the waterway’s reopening to changes in US and Israeli actions.
Speaking at his weekly press briefing in Tehran on Monday, Baqaei said the Strait of Hormuz had been closed following what Iran described as US and Israeli military aggression. He said the conditions imposed on Iran and the strategic waterway by the two countries would determine when the strait could reopen.
“As long as the US naval blockade continues, the necessary conditions for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz do not exist,” Baqaei said.
He called on Washington to halt and alter what he termed its “destructive actions”, saying this would be necessary before the two sides could discuss their next steps.
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea and is a major global energy corridor. It carries oil and liquefied natural gas exports from several major Gulf producers to international markets.
Baqaei also said discussions between Iran and Oman over a shipping route were a bilateral issue involving the two countries.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Aragchi said on Sunday that Tehran and Washington were not currently engaged in negotiations. Speaking to reporters at the Centre for Political and International Studies of Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Aragchi said intermediaries were continuing efforts to find a way to resume talks.
He said Iran would not return to negotiations until the United States ended what Tehran considers violations of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) and addressed the breaches it had committed.
Aragchi also said Iran and Oman were in the final stages of discussions on establishing a new maritime route in the Strait of Hormuz. However, he stressed that any agreement with Oman would not mean the waterway itself would reopen.
“The opening of the Strait of Hormuz is subject to a series of conditions,” Aragchi said.
