The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has entered its 11th year with more than 1.37 lakh government buyer organisations and nearly 25 lakh sellers and service providers registered on the platform, facilitating cumulative procurement exceeding Rs 20 lakh crore.
Launched on August 9, 2016, GeM has evolved into a key component of India’s digital public procurement ecosystem, with the focus now shifting towards a more integrated and technology-driven marketplace.
According to an official factsheet, GeM currently offers more than 10,660 product categories and 350 service categories to meet the diverse procurement requirements of government organisations. Products available on the platform range from medical equipment, furniture and computers to fire safety equipment and handicrafts. Services include transportation, catering, vehicle hiring and human resource services.
The platform supports multiple procurement modes, integrated payment systems and online contract generation, enabling end-to-end digital procurement with greater transparency and efficiency.
GeM has also expanded access for Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs), women-led businesses, startups and other traditionally underrepresented groups. More than 11 lakh registered MSEs have executed over 51 lakh orders worth more than Rs 2.36 lakh crore.
Women-led MSEs account for more than 2.1 lakh registered enterprises, which have secured government procurement worth over Rs 28,000 crore. Procurement from SC/ST enterprises has crossed Rs 6,000 crore, registering nearly 28 per cent annual growth, while purchases from startups have exceeded Rs 19,000 crore, growing by more than 36 per cent annually.
GeM has introduced initiatives such as SWAYATT, Startup Runway 2.0, Womaniya and the SARAS Collection to expand market opportunities for startups, women entrepreneurs, Self Help Groups (SHGs), artisans and other underserved communities.
In June 2026, GeM partnered with Common Service Centre e-Governance Services India Limited (CSC-SPV) to establish 50 GeM Suvidha Kendras on a pilot basis across selected States and Union Territories.
The government said artificial intelligence and broader participation would further strengthen transparency, efficiency and governance on the platform while supporting initiatives such as Vocal for Local and Make in India.
