Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Friday urged the Opposition to allow a discussion on the alleged NEET paper leak in Parliament, warning that the Congress would “fall into a trap” if it continued disrupting proceedings during the Monsoon Session.
The remarks came after the first week of the session witnessed repeated disruptions, with the Opposition insisting on the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan before participating in any discussion on the issue.
Addressing reporters in the Parliament complex, Rijiju said the government was ready to debate the matter and had appealed to the Opposition, including Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, to allow proceedings to continue.
“We could not discuss the NEET exam paper leak in Parliament. We urged Rahul Gandhi to allow the discussion to begin immediately, but the Congress has shown it is not interested in a discussion,” Rijiju said.
He stressed that Parliament should focus on strengthening the examination system rather than politicising the issue, adding that prolonged disruptions would not help resolve students’ concerns.
The minister also announced that the Centre is preparing to introduce a Bill on Monday proposing stricter punishment for examination paper leaks and related malpractices. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had directed that there should be no delay in bringing the legislation.
Rijiju warned that continued disruption of Parliament could politically backfire on the Congress, claiming the government was taking important steps to safeguard students’ future.
Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi alleged that his microphone was switched off in the Lok Sabha and that he was not given an opportunity to speak during the proceedings.
The proposed legislation comes amid nationwide protests over the alleged NEET paper leak, with students demanding accountability and reforms in the examination system.
