Women are playing a pivotal role in Punjab Government’s anti-drug campaign by motivating family members to seek treatment and supporting them through recovery, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh said on Friday.
Highlighting the importance of family support in combating substance abuse, the Minister said mothers, wives and sisters have emerged as key contributors to the success of the state’s ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’ campaign.
Speaking after an awareness programme titled “Menace of Substance Abuse – Uncovering the Burden on Women” held at SFC College, Jalalabad, Dr. Balbir Singh said every successful recovery is backed by the support of family and the community.
The programme featured testimonies from recovering patients and their family members.
Ragini Kaur from Ludhiana shared that her husband overcame drug addiction after undergoing treatment at a de-addiction and rehabilitation centre. She said the family later encouraged another relative to seek treatment, who also recovered successfully.
Balwinder Kaur of Buttar Kalan village in Moga recounted her husband’s journey to recovery, saying counselling helped the entire family understand that overcoming addiction requires collective support. She added that another youth from their neighbourhood also successfully completed treatment.
Dr. Arvind Goyal, District Nodal Psychiatrist, Ludhiana, said family involvement significantly improves treatment outcomes. He noted that while the government has expanded access to free de-addiction, counselling and rehabilitation services, emotional support from family members remains essential for long-term recovery.
Dr. Balbir Singh said the Punjab Government is strengthening family counselling as an integral part of treatment at government-run de-addiction centres and reaffirmed its commitment to making the fight against drug addiction a people’s movement.
