The Union Cabinet on Friday approved a proposed Bill aimed at introducing stricter punishment for paper leak and examination malpractice cases, along with provisions for setting up fast-track courts, official sources said.
The legislation is expected to be introduced in Parliament next week.
According to sources, the proposed fast-track courts would be required to complete trials and deliver verdicts within three months.
The Cabinet approval comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the government was preparing a comprehensive legal framework to deal with paper leaks through stronger penal provisions and speedy adjudication.
In a video message released on Thursday, the Prime Minister said paper leaks cause immense distress to students and their families and assured that the government was committed to taking stringent action against those involved in examination-related fraud.
He said the Centre had taken multiple measures in recent months to address such cases and that those responsible had been identified and arrested.
PM Modi also stated that he had personally worked on a proposal for fast-track courts and tougher punishment for examination malpractices, adding that the matter would be placed before the Cabinet for approval.
The move comes amid growing public concern over alleged irregularities in competitive and entrance examinations, including the NEET controversy, which has triggered demands for stronger safeguards and quicker prosecution of offenders.
Further details of the proposed legislation are expected to be made public when the Bill is introduced in Parliament.
