A 19-year-old youth was arrested by Pune Police for allegedly celebrating the birthday of an accused lodged in Yerwada Central Jail by bursting firecrackers outside the prison and uploading a video of the act on social media.
Police said the action was taken amid growing concerns over attempts to glorify criminals and accused persons through online platforms.
According to officials, a team from Yerwada Police Station was conducting routine patrolling near the jail on the directions of senior officers when it received information that wanted accused Shankar Balasaheb Bhalke, a resident of Dhankawadi, would arrive at Post Office Chowk.
Acting on the tip-off, police intercepted and arrested Bhalke.
During questioning, Bhalke allegedly told investigators that he and his associates had burst firecrackers on a road near the security wall of Yerwada Central Jail to mark the birthday of Sultan Sayyad, an accused currently lodged in the prison.
Police said the celebration caused disruption to traffic and created a potential risk for commuters and pedestrians in the area.
The accused allegedly recorded the incident and uploaded the video on Instagram with the intention of projecting the jailed accused in a favourable manner. The video later gained attention on social media.
Pune Police officials said strict action would continue against those attempting to glorify criminals or promote criminal activities through social media platforms. They warned that such acts would not be tolerated.
The operation was conducted by the investigation team of Yerwada Police Station under the supervision of Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar. Police Sub-Inspector Kishore Berad and other members of the investigation team played a key role in the action.
Police also referred to a similar incident on March 18, when three youths were arrested for allegedly bursting firecrackers outside the high-security Adharwadi Jail. The incident had also involved allegations of misbehaviour with police personnel and led to action by Khadakpada Police.
