Punjab Cabinet Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Hardeep Singh Mundian on Thursday accused Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials of putting political pressure on his family during a recent search at his nephew’s residence, alleging that officials asked the family to convey to him that he should leave the AAP and join another party.
Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, Mundian also hit back at BJP leader Ravneet Singh Bittu over his remarks that he had left Punjab for the United States, sarcastically saying that Bittu appeared to have started a “travel agency” after his own political ticket was cut.
“I am holding this press conference in Chandigarh, not America,” Mundian said, responding to Bittu’s remarks. He alleged that Bittu had been claiming since Wednesday that he had gone to the US.
“After his own ticket was cut, it appears that Ravneet Singh Bittu has started a travel agency on Samrala Road and has booked tickets to America for me and my nephew,” he said.
Mundian questioned the manner in which the ED search was conducted at his nephew’s residence, saying the family had already suffered a tragedy following the death of his nephew’s brother. He said his nephew subsequently moved to Ludhiana with his children and started a business to support the family.
According to Mundian, the search continued from 11 am to 3 pm and subjected a widow, children and a pregnant woman to what he described as harassment and intimidation.
“The ED search subjected a widow and her young daughter to harassment and intimidation,” he said.
Mundian further alleged that officials questioned the children about why they were living with him and told the family to convey that he should leave the AAP, while his nephew should stop supporting him because the party was supposedly the “wrong party”.
He questioned whether the action was solely related to an investigation or also involved an attempt to exert political pressure.
Mundian also alleged that a small girl remained hungry and crying for hours during the search and that a one-month-old baby was not allowed to be fed. He claimed his nephew’s pregnant wife was made to stand for three to four hours without being given an opportunity to sit.
The minister said that when the officials were leaving, the family asked for a written record of anything recovered from the residence. He claimed that the document subsequently provided stated that nothing had been found apart from old household articles.
“If nothing was recovered, why was a family harassed for three to four hours?” he asked.
Targeting the BJP, Mundian alleged that the party was trying to fight elections through fear after failing to generate public enthusiasm at its rallies.
“Punjab is not a place where people can be intimidated through ED raids or threats. We are Punjabis and we are not afraid,” he asserted.
Mundian also defended the AAP’s record on honesty and described AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann as “kattar imaandar” leaders.
“I am a soldier of kattar imaandar AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal and CM Bhagwant Singh Mann. I will never bow before BJP’s pressure,” he said.
Referring to earlier cases involving AAP leaders, Mundian cited the cases of Satyendar Jain and Manish Sisodia, alleging that central agencies had previously targeted Delhi’s AAP leadership ahead of elections. He claimed similar tactics were now being attempted in Punjab.
Mundian said the people of Punjab had already rejected the BJP politically and alleged that the party was now relying on central agencies because of concern over the upcoming elections. He maintained that the AAP would not be intimidated or abandon its principles.
