Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab leader and MLA Amansher Singh Sherry Kalsi on Thursday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using central agencies to pressure the party after its anti-drug rallies and roadshows allegedly failed to gain public support in Punjab.
Addressing a press conference alongside Punjab Youth Welfare Board Chairman Parminder Singh Goldy, Kalsi claimed that the BJP’s anti-drug campaign in the state had “completely flopped”, alleging that people across Punjab had opposed the rallies and roadshows.
He alleged that after facing resistance, the BJP had returned to what he described as its “old strategy” of using the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against Punjab.
Kalsi said the BJP-led government had allegedly facilitated an ED raid at the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) in Mohali and a separate raid at the residence of the personal assistant of Punjab Cabinet Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian.
He alleged that the developments showed the BJP was relying on the ED and other central agencies to pressure AAP leaders, workers and government officials in Punjab.
“The BJP is under the misconception that it can frighten or pressure Aam Aadmi Party leaders, workers and honest officers of Punjab,” Kalsi said, according to the statement.
The AAP MLA also claimed that tactics allegedly used by the BJP in West Bengal and Delhi would not work in Punjab. He invoked Punjab’s history of resistance and said its people and political leaders would not be intimidated by such actions.
Kalsi advised the BJP to focus on governance and development if it wanted to compete politically in the state.
He highlighted initiatives of the AAP government under the leadership of party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, including the transformation of government schools, construction of Mohalla Clinics and hospitals, provision of 600 units of free electricity and pilgrimage tours for elderly people.
Instead of what he described as political conspiracies, Kalsi said, the BJP should undertake similar development work in the states where it is in power.
The allegations against the BJP and the characterisation of the ED actions as politically motivated were made by Kalsi and were not independently established in the material provided.
