Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab MLA Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal on Thursday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and other central agencies to intimidate political opponents and target governments led by opposition parties.
Addressing a press conference, Dhaliwal alleged that the use of agencies such as the CBI and ED against political opponents had reached an unprecedented level under the BJP-led government. He claimed that the BJP was attempting to fight political battles by creating fear, weakening opposition parties and putting pressure on their leaders instead of relying on electoral support.
Referring to recent ED action in Punjab, Dhaliwal alleged that the objective was to intimidate AAP leaders and officials and to damage the image of the Punjab government. “This is not merely an ED attack on AAP government; this is an attack by Delhi on Punjab,” he said.
Dhaliwal said Punjab had historically resisted attempts to suppress the state and asserted that neither AAP leaders nor the people of Punjab would be intimidated by such actions.
He alleged that similar tactics had been used against opposition parties and governments in Maharashtra, Delhi, Bihar, West Bengal and other parts of the country, and claimed that the BJP was now attempting to employ the same approach in Punjab.
Taking aim at the BJP’s recent ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’, Dhaliwal said the response to the campaign in Punjab had, in his view, exposed a gap between the BJP’s claims and its political acceptance in the state. He also questioned the BJP’s campaign against drugs in Punjab while referring to drug seizures in Gujarat.
“If the BJP is serious about a drug-free Punjab, it should take its yatra to Gujarat,” he said.
Dhaliwal said the Bhagwant Mann government had implemented several public welfare schemes and claimed that people continued to support the state government’s work.
He also referred to AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh, having faced imprisonment in cases pursued by central agencies. According to Dhaliwal, such actions had not forced the party to surrender politically.
The AAP MLA further questioned the BJP’s political position in Punjab, recalling that the party had won two Assembly seats in the 2022 Punjab elections. He said the BJP should not assume that the use of central agencies could translate into political support in the state.
Dhaliwal said AAP would continue its political opposition to the BJP and would not be intimidated by the ED or any other agency. Invoking Punjab’s history of resisting attempts to suppress the state, he asserted that the people of Punjab would give a democratic response to what he described as the BJP’s attack on Punjab.
