The government and the sugar industry are working together to ensure adequate supplies and reasonable sugar prices during the upcoming festive season, Indian Sugar and Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) Director General Deepak Ballani said on Thursday.
Speaking to IANS, Ballani said maintaining stable supplies and affordable prices was a priority as demand is expected to rise during Dussehra, Diwali and other festivals.
“First of all, government and industry, we are committed to provide sugar at a very reasonable rate to the consumers, especially during the festival demand, festival season,” he said.
“We have Dussehra very soon, Diwali, a lot of festivals, so we have to ensure that the sugar is available at a very reasonable price. The retail prices, as I said, have already come down,” he added.
Ballani said domestic sugar supplies remained adequate and efforts were being made to keep prices under control. He added that retail prices had already started moderating and were expected to decline further in the coming weeks.
Explaining the price movement, Ballani said there is generally a time lag between changes in ex-mill prices and their impact on retail prices, as lower wholesale costs take time to pass through the supply chain.
According to him, ex-mill sugar prices have already rationalised by around 25-30 per cent, with the pan-India average currently at about Rs 4,450 per quintal.
He said retail prices were expected to gradually correct as market participants adjusted to the lower ex-mill price levels.
“Basically, what happens is that it takes some time for the prices to reflect all the way down to the retail prices. Now that the ex-mill prices have already rationalised by almost 25 to 30 per cent, pan-India average ex-mill prices are at Rs 4,450. So I believe with time to come, retail prices will also correct,” Ballani said.
