Janata Dal-United (JD-U) national spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan on Thursday said those accused in the alleged molestation of a minor girl in Bihar’s Samastipur would face strict action, similar to the accused in the recent Jamui case.
The alleged incident took place in Jagatsinghpur village on Bandh Bypass Road under the Karpurigram police station area. A video of the incident began circulating widely on social media late Wednesday.
Speaking to IANS, Ranjan said he did not yet have official information about the Samastipur case but asserted that those involved in such crimes would be punished. He also said people sharing the video and revealing the victim’s identity would face action.
Referring to the Jamui case, Ranjan said the accused who allegedly fled from police were shot in the leg and subsequently apprehended, and claimed they would face lengthy imprisonment. He said criminals involved in such cases would not be pardoned.
JD-U leader Shyam Rajak said the incidents were concerning and said the Bihar government was taking cognisance of the matter.
“Bihar’s law and order is not in bad condition; I can assure you of that. However, yes, there have been incidents that are concerning and hurtful,” Rajak said.
He said investigations were underway and that strict action was being taken against the accused. Rajak added that the Chief Minister was working with the authorities and police to ensure those responsible were apprehended and that such incidents did not recur.
Bihar Minister and Hindustani Awam Morcha leader Santosh Kumar Suman described the incident as unfortunate and said the NDA government was “fully sensitive and alert” to the matter. Referring to the Jamui case, he said those accused of such acts would be apprehended and punished according to law.
Lok Janshakti Party-Ram Vilas MP Shambhavi Choudhary condemned the incident and said she stood with the victim. She also thanked Samastipur Police for initiating action after the video began circulating.
Opposition Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad, meanwhile, criticised the state government over the law-and-order situation and alleged that it had failed to handle such incidents.
According to preliminary information available to police, the girl had stopped along Bandh Bypass Road in Jagatsinghpur village with a male companion to take photographs when a group of youths allegedly surrounded her and misbehaved with her.
The video circulating on social media allegedly shows some youths questioning the girl about her identity, verbally abusing her and engaging in inappropriate behaviour. The footage also appears to show an attempt to pull her along the road.
The allegations are subject to the ongoing police investigation.
