The Punjab Government has released nearly ₹624 crore in financial assistance to more than 7 lakh widows and destitute women during the current financial year under the Financial Assistance Scheme for Widows and Destitute Women, Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr Baljit Kaur said on Thursday.
Dr Baljit Kaur said the government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, was committed to ensuring that every eligible and needy woman receives timely financial support. She said the scheme was aimed not only at providing economic assistance but also at helping beneficiaries live with dignity, confidence and greater self-reliance.
The Minister said a budget provision of more than ₹1,200 crore had been made for the scheme for 2026-27. She said the allocation reflected the government’s commitment to strengthening the state’s social security system and ensuring hassle-free delivery of assistance to deserving beneficiaries.
Describing the beneficiaries as women who had faced significant challenges and hardship, Dr Baljit Kaur said the government’s objective was to provide them with a reliable support system through regular financial assistance.
She directed department officials to intensify awareness campaigns at the grassroots level so that eligible women are aware of the scheme and can access its benefits. She called for coordinated efforts involving Anganwadi workers, Sewa Kendras, Panchayats, Urban Local Bodies and field-level staff to identify eligible beneficiaries and facilitate their enrolment.
The Minister made it clear that no eligible woman should be deprived of the scheme’s benefits because of lack of awareness, administrative delay or negligence.
Dr Baljit Kaur said the Punjab Government had adopted a transparent and people-centric approach to implementing welfare schemes. She added that the department was conducting regular monitoring and reviews to ensure that social security assistance reaches those who need it.
She appealed to eligible women and their families to contact their nearest District Social Security Office, Sewa Kendra or concerned government office for detailed information about the scheme and the assistance available under it.
