Punjab Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Thursday said the state government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann had fulfilled its guarantees and undertaken major initiatives for people across sections of society during the last four-and-a-half years.
Addressing a press conference, Bains said the government had delivered on commitments including free electricity, improved education and healthcare facilities, honourarium for families of martyrs and financial assistance for women.
He said Punjab was the only state in the country where health insurance cover of up to Rs 10 lakh was being provided to everyone without discrimination based on religion, caste or annual income.
Bains also said that, beyond the promised Rs 1,000 monthly assistance for women, women from Dalit families were being provided Rs 1,500.
Comparing the scheme with programmes in other states, he said Delhi and Haryana had announced assistance of Rs 2,100 but imposed several conditions related to income and household assets. In Punjab, he claimed, every woman above the age of 18 was receiving the benefit without such conditions.
The minister also highlighted what he described as large-scale initiatives aimed at securing Punjab’s future.
Turning his criticism towards the BJP-led Centre, Bains alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party had failed to gain political support in Punjab and was now attempting to enter the state through central investigative agencies after other tactics had failed.
He claimed that attempts involving rallies, intimidation and alleged threats to political leaders had not yielded results.
Bains said Punjab’s political outlook was different from that of other states and asserted that attempts to use central agencies would not succeed in the state. He further claimed that such tactics could result in the BJP losing even part of its existing vote share.
The minister said Punjabis opposed what he described as high-handedness and would reject such attempts.
On alleged efforts to obstruct development works undertaken by the Mann government, Bains expressed confidence that the projects would continue. He said Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had “God’s blessings” and asserted that development works in the state would not be stopped.
The political allegations made by Bains against the BJP were his own claims and were not independently established in the statement.
