The Uttarakhand government has decided to reimburse the State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) collected on tickets for screenings of Hanuman Ansh in cinemas and multiplexes across the state, extending tax relief to the film based on the life and spiritual journey of Neem Karoli Baba.
Director General of Information Banshidhar Tiwari has issued an order directing the State Tax Department to take the necessary steps to reimburse the SGST component applicable to ticket sales for the film. The concession effectively makes the state’s share of GST on Hanuman Ansh tickets refundable to eligible exhibitors.
Both Central GST and SGST are levied on cinema tickets under the applicable GST framework. The Uttarakhand government has opted to reimburse the state component as an incentive to promote the film.
Directed by Vishal Chaturvedi, Hanuman Ansh portrays the spiritual transformation of Laxman Das, who went on to become widely known as Neem Karoli Baba. Shobinaw Satyaa plays the lead role, while Chandan K. Anand, Purnima Tiwari and veteran actor Anil Rastogi are also part of the cast.
The film, which opened to a modest Rs 10 lakh, has recorded a sharp turnaround at the box office and continued to draw audiences several weeks into its theatrical run. Trade reports put its India gross at around Rs 192.75 crore after 35 days, while subsequent reports showed its worldwide collection crossing Rs 200 crore.
Uttarakhand is not the first state to extend tax relief to the film. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai announced on September 11 that Hanuman Ansh would be made tax-free in the state after watching the film with his family and members of his Cabinet.
The Chhattisgarh government said the film highlights India’s spiritual heritage and the values associated with the country’s saint tradition, including service, compassion and devotion.
