Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday accused the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress of having failed to ensure adequate law and order and healthcare infrastructure in Gorakhpur during their respective tenures, attributing the district’s earlier problems to what he described as an “incompetent” and “careless” approach.
Adityanath was speaking at a programme in Gorakhpur where he inaugurated and laid foundation stones for various development projects besides inaugurating a ‘Kalyan Mandapam’.
Highlighting the importance of law and order, the Chief Minister said people could participate in public events and pursue their daily activities only when they felt secure. He said the BJP government, after coming to power in Uttar Pradesh in 2017 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, had prioritised public safety.
“Today there is rule of law in Uttar Pradesh and the state is free of riots and curfews,” Adityanath said. He claimed that criminals were either in jail or had died and alleged that incidents such as threats, kidnappings and extortion could no longer be carried out openly.
He said the government had also developed the infrastructure required to enable people to travel without hesitation.
Taking aim at previous governments, Adityanath said the fertiliser factory in Gorakhpur, which he said had remained closed during the SP and Congress regimes, had been made operational under the BJP government.
The Chief Minister also referred to the encephalitis outbreak that affected Gorakhpur for decades. He alleged that children had died due to the disease because of the “incompetence and careless approach” of previous governments and claimed that no Chief Minister or Cabinet Minister from the SP or Congress had visited poor and affected patients at BRD Medical College. He said that, while serving as an MP, he had organised protests over the issue.
Adityanath said that after he became Chief Minister, the government eliminated encephalitis within two years, after the disease had affected people in the state for around four decades. He also claimed that the disease and “mafias” had been eradicated from Uttar Pradesh.
He cited the transformation of Ramgarh Tal as another example of development, saying the area, once associated with garbage and crime, now attracted visitors from across India and abroad.
The Chief Minister also accused the SP of allowing alleged “syndicates” to exploit recruitment opportunities, claiming that young people were deprived of jobs under the previous regime. He alleged that poor law and order and a lack of governance vision had resulted in anarchy and an “identity crisis” for Uttar Pradesh.
Adityanath said the state was now contributing to India’s economic growth and claimed that more than 500 industries had been established in Gorakhpur alone.
