Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not backtrack from his commitments to the people despite opposition, describing it as one of his key qualities.
Addressing a programme in Kolkata to mark the launch of the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’, which will be organised on the occasion of Prime Minister Modi’s birthday on September 17, Singh said some leaders retreat when faced with opposition, but Modi remains committed to his stated objectives.
“There are some who, if they ever see opposition, move away from those paths. Our Prime Minister always faces a lot of opposition. But he never backs out. Instead, he becomes even more committed in securing the future of the country,” Singh said.
The Defence Minister cited the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) as an example, saying that around 59 crore bank accounts have been opened under the scheme and that a majority of the account holders are women.
He said the scheme had also faced opposition when it was launched, but the criticism did not prevent the government from proceeding with the initiative.
Singh also highlighted the growth of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and said the digital payments system had received appreciation from French President Emmanuel Macron.
“When the UPI was launched in India many thought that its success was not possible in India. Some people even questioned whether this system would benefit the poor people or not. Now, the UPI system has been running in the country for the last 10 years. In August, 23.66 billion transactions were made,” Singh said.
He added that UPI was being introduced in several countries and described the digital payments system as more than a technological development, saying it had brought about a “revolution”.
Later, speaking to the media, Singh praised Suvendu Adhikari and his government’s performance during its first four months in office.
“Bengal will move forward under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Under his leadership, the Bharatiya Janata Party formed the government in West Bengal for the first time since Independence. Suvendu Adhikari has become the Chief Minister,” he said.
Singh claimed that Adhikari’s work had received appreciation in other states and expressed his expectation that West Bengal would emerge as a major global shipbuilding hub under his leadership.
