Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 25 years in public life, saying even his political opponents could not accuse him of corruption.
Addressing a gathering at Sharmishtha Lake in Vadnagar during the launch of the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’, Shah described Modi’s public life as one marked by personal integrity and simplicity.
“For 25 years of public life, there has not been a single stain on his kurta. Even his opponents, even those in the Opposition, cannot accuse Modi ji of corruption,” Shah said.
Shah compared Modi’s political journey to a lotus, saying he had maintained what he described as a clean record despite working in a challenging political environment.
The Home Minister said he had worked closely with Modi from his organisational years in Gujarat through his tenure as Chief Minister and later as Prime Minister. He also referred to Modi’s family background and said that despite spending 25 years in public office, relatively little was known publicly about his relatives.
“Modi ji’s family is known to the entire country, because Modi ji has considered India his family,” Shah said, adding that the Prime Minister regarded the people of the country as his family.
The remarks were made as Modi turned 76 on Thursday. The ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’, launched to mark his birthday and 25 years in public life, will continue until October 7.
The Vadnagar programme included a Maha Aarti at Sharmishtha Lake, a march to Hatkeshwar Mahadev Temple, a cleanliness campaign and the launch of a service journey from Vadnagar to Varanasi. A bike yatra connecting Modi’s birthplace with Varanasi, his parliamentary constituency, was also among the programme’s key activities.
Shah also spoke about changes in the Padma Awards, recalling his time in Delhi between 2010 and 2013 when, according to him, recommendations from influential circles often played a role in the selection process. He said the awards subsequently expanded their recognition of people working for communities across different states and regions.
Concluding his address, Shah described the central theme of Modi’s public life in two words — “Bharat First” — and said the Prime Minister had dedicated himself to the welfare of the country and its people.
