At least two terrorists have been killed in an ongoing joint operation by security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district, officials said on Thursday.
The operation was launched after suspicious movement was reported in the Majalta area of Udhampur on Wednesday evening. Jammu and Kashmir Police and Army para troopers initially launched a cordon-and-search operation, during which contact was established with the terrorists and an exchange of fire began.
“During the ensuing gunfight, two terrorists have been killed. The operation is still going on in the area. The exact identity of the slain terrorists is being ascertained,” officials said.
Reinforcements were rushed to the area after the encounter began. A joint team comprising the Indian Army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police is carrying out searches in the area.
Security forces are using sniffer dogs and aerial surveillance to sanitise the area and locate any remaining terrorists. A high alert has been maintained, with vehicle checking and tight security cordons in place along strategic routes in the Udhampur-Reasi belt.
The operation comes amid intensified security activity in the Pir Panjal region following the recent busting of an alleged overground worker network linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in Rajouri.
On September 15, Rajouri Police arrested three people — Zakir Hussain, Mohd Azam and Mohd Mushtaq — in connection with an alleged terror module operating in the Pir Panjal region.
The hilly areas of Udhampur, Reasi, Ramban, Kathua, Poonch and Rajouri districts have remained under heightened security focus amid reports of movements of suspected Pakistani terrorists in the difficult-to-access terrain.
Anti-terror operations have continued in these areas for more than six months, with security forces reporting the neutralisation of several terrorists, including some senior cadres.
Officials have said sustained operations and searches are aimed at preventing terrorists from establishing bases in the region and planning attacks against security forces, the Army and civilians.
