Rights groups have reported the killing of a civilian and the alleged abduction of a 16-year-old schoolgirl in separate incidents in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, renewing concerns over enforced disappearances and violence against civilians.
Paank, the human rights wing of the Baloch National Movement, said armed men attacked the home of Tariq, son of Allah Dad, in the Malant area of Tump in Kech district on September 12. It alleged that the attackers attempted to take Tariq’s son, Muhammad Tahir, away. When the family resisted, the attackers opened fire, killing Tahir and seriously injuring his father.
Paank described the incident as an attempted enforced disappearance followed by a killing and called for an impartial investigation and accountability. The circumstances and identities of the attackers could not be independently established from the available reports.
In another incident, Baloch Voice for Justice (BVJ) reported that 16-year-old Sidra, daughter of Allah Bakhsh, was allegedly abducted from Khattan Girls High School in Khuzdar district on September 11. Her whereabouts have remained unknown, according to reports citing the rights group. Local reports also said there was no official statement on the incident at the time of reporting.
The reports come amid longstanding concerns over alleged enforced disappearances in Balochistan. UN human rights mechanisms have previously received allegations involving enforced disappearances, arbitrary detention and violence against Baloch people, including women and girls.
BVJ has urged the United Nations to address what it describes as a continuing pattern of abductions and enforced disappearances involving Baloch women and girls.
Last month, the Baloch Women Forum also condemned the alleged disappearance of three civilians in Kech, including two minors identified as 17-year-old Shahnaz and 14-year-old Sharanaz, as well as 50-year-old Arif Essa. The organisation said the two girls had previously been subjected to alleged enforced disappearance and described the repeated targeting of minors as a serious violation of their rights.
The allegations have not been independently verified, while Pakistan has previously disputed claims of large-scale enforced disappearances in Balochistan.
