Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay returned to Chennai on Thursday after completing his official visit to London, with the state government saying the tour resulted in investment proposals and commitments worth Rs 15,300 crore and is expected to create more than 10,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.
According to a state government statement, the agreements and investment commitments were secured during Vijay’s UK visit as part of efforts to attract global capital, strengthen industrial development and position Tamil Nadu as a major destination for advanced manufacturing and technology.
The commitments cover sectors including automobile components, manufacturing, research and development, renewable energy, power-grid equipment and Global Capability Centres.
Among the major proposals is an Rs 11,000 crore investment commitment from Samvardhana Motherson International and its European and UK-based joint venture companies, which is expected to generate around 7,000 jobs across design, engineering, manufacturing, assembly and logistics.
Wilson Power Solutions has signed an MoU for an Rs 300 crore investment in Tiruvallur, with around 400 jobs expected to be created. A leading European automobile component manufacturer has also submitted a letter of intent indicating an Rs 3,000 crore investment proposal in Tamil Nadu.
Sweden-based Sigma Technology Group, through its Indian arm Sria Solutions, has signed an MoU to expand its Global Capability Centres in Chennai and Tiruchirappalli, with 600 high-value jobs expected. Ernst & Young has also signed an MoU under a build-operate-transform-transfer model for a Global Capability Centre near Chennai’s Mount-Poonamallee corridor, involving an investment of Rs 1,000 crore and more than 2,000 high-value jobs.
During the visit, Vijay also held discussions with global companies and business leaders on expanding trade and investment ties. State officials and representatives of Guidance Tamil Nadu met companies from sectors including aerospace, defence, chemicals, logistics, construction, financial services and retail.
The Chief Minister also visited the Silverstone Motor Racing Circuit as part of plans for a proposed Motor Sports City in Tamil Nadu and reviewed its track, race-control, safety and operational facilities.
After returning to Chennai, Vijay thanked members of the Tamil diaspora in the UK for their reception and support during his visit.
The state government said the overseas engagement would help expand Tamil Nadu’s industrial pipeline, attract technology and capital and create employment opportunities, particularly for the state’s workforce.
