Actor, filmmaker and parliamentarian Kamal Haasan paid a glowing tribute to legendary Carnatic vocalist and Bharat Ratna awardee M.S. Subbulakshmi as the filming of her much-awaited biopic began in Chennai on Wednesday.
Haasan, who sounded the clapboard to mark the commencement of the project, described Subbulakshmi as “India’s pan-Indian lady superstar”, underlining the extraordinary reach of her music and legacy.
The biopic is being directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, while composer Anirudh Ravichander is handling the music. Production is being jointly backed by Geetha Arts, Rockline Entertainment and Bunny Vas Works. Actress Rashmika Mandanna will portray Subbulakshmi in the film.
The launch coincides with Subbulakshmi’s 110th birth anniversary and marks the beginning of a cinematic project centred on one of India’s most celebrated classical musicians.
Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi, popularly known as M.S. Subbulakshmi, was born in Madurai in 1916 and became one of the most influential figures in Carnatic music. Her repertoire and devotional renditions helped take Indian classical music to audiences across the country and abroad.
Subbulakshmi became the first musician to receive the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour. She was also the first Indian musician to perform at the United Nations General Assembly, where she presented a historic concert in 1966.
Her influence extended beyond the classical music establishment. The Press Information Bureau has noted that her music reached audiences beyond traditional connoisseurs and helped bridge cultural and regional divides. She performed internationally, including at the Edinburgh International Festival and London’s Royal Albert Hall.
Subbulakshmi also appeared in films during her career, notably in Seva Sadanam, Savitri and Meera, while continuing to build an unparalleled reputation as a Carnatic vocalist.
The new biopic seeks to bring her remarkable artistic journey and enduring cultural legacy to a new generation.
