Playback singer Sonu Nigam has clarified that a video circulating online, purportedly showing his reaction to Salman Khan’s singing, has been digitally edited and taken out of context.
Sonu took to Instagram on Thursday to share the edited video along with a clarification. He explained that the original footage showed him reacting to the singing of a young Pakistani girl and that it had been incorrectly stitched together with a clip of Salman Khan’s song ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’.
Sharing the edited video, Sonu wrote, “Can expect the unexpected on internet. I stumbled upon this edited video. This was my reaction for a Pakistani little girl singer (sic).”
Sonu Nigam and Salman Khan have shared a long professional association dating back to the 1990s. One of their notable collaborations is ‘Jaane Kya Hua Hai’, featuring Salman and sung by Sonu.
Their professional relationship, however, has also been linked to reports of differences in the mid-2010s, around the period when ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’ was released. The song was part of a trend in which actors began lending their own voices to their films.
Sonu Nigam has previously expressed nuanced views on actors taking up singing in Bollywood. While acknowledging and respecting actors who explore music, he has also stressed that singing is a specialised craft that requires years of training, practice and dedication.
He has at times questioned the increasing practice of actors singing for films when trained playback singers are available, arguing that playback singing involves a distinct skill set and emotional understanding. His comments have generally focused on the demands of the profession and the expertise required in playback singing rather than dismissing actors who choose to sing.
