Six students drowned while immersing a Ganesh idol in a lake in Telangana’s Sangareddy district on Wednesday, police said. The victims, aged between 17 and 22, were participating in the immersion ceremony at Peddakanjerla village under Patancheru Police Station limits in the Cyberabad Commissionerate.
According to police, the students accidentally fell into Neredu Cheruvu while carrying out the immersion. Locals pulled them out of the water and rushed them to a hospital, where doctors declared all six brought dead.
The deceased were identified as Narasimha, 21, Teja, 17, Sidhartha, 17, Ganesh, 18, Sumanth Reddy, 17, and Uday Kiran, 22.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed shock over the deaths and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families. He directed the district administration to provide all necessary support to the affected families and instructed officials to ensure adequate precautions during Ganesh idol immersion activities.
Women and Child Welfare Minister Seethakka also expressed grief over the incident and assured the families of government support. She spoke with the Sangareddy District Collector to seek details about the accident, rescue efforts and assistance being provided to the families.
The minister also spoke with Women and Child Welfare Department Secretary Shruti Ojha and directed officials to coordinate relief measures and strengthen safety arrangements for children.
Seethakka specifically instructed officials to remain vigilant at immersion sites and ensure that children are kept away from dangerous water bodies. She called for strict implementation of safety measures to prevent similar incidents during festival-related immersion ceremonies.
The incident has highlighted the need for heightened vigilance and safety arrangements around lakes and other water bodies during Ganesh idol immersion programmes.
