Hollywood actress Uma Thurman has recalled how a childhood fascination with a pair of red high-heeled shoes led to her first encounter with the police when she was just three or four years old.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the actress recounted how she secretly took 75 cents from home and set out alone to buy the shoes after spotting them in a shop window while her family was moving to Amherst, Massachusetts.
Thurman said she remembered seeing the shoes as the family drove into the town, where her father was joining a teaching position. The following day, while her mother was taking a nap, the young Thurman took the money from a table, found the shop and tried on the shoes.
She recalled telling the shopkeeper that her mother would arrive shortly. After agreeing that the shoes fitted, she handed him the 75 cents. However, the shopkeeper became suspicious and realised that the child’s mother was unlikely to show up.
“And then the questioning started,” Thurman recalled, explaining that the police were called and asked her where she lived.
Unable to remember the street name, she tried to reassure the officers that she could find her way home. Instead, they took her in a police car, an experience she remembers as one of the most frightening moments of her life.
“I really thought I was getting arrested and I sort of was,” she said.
Thurman recalled sitting on a police officer’s lap in the back of the car as they drove around, but she eventually became unable to recognise her own house.
The search ended when the officers spotted her mother, whom Thurman described as a long-haired hippie wearing a muumuu, running and screaming in the street.
