The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in support of singer Daler Mehndi amid a controversy over a video showing Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal alleging that the singer was under the influence of alcohol during a public performance.
FWICE said it was aware that Mehndi is not a “consumer of alcohol” and highlighted his reported health-related issues and recovery from surgery.
In its letters, the federation said concerns about an artist’s health or performance should be handled with sensitivity and discretion rather than through public reprimand.
“While we recognise the importance of ensuring the smooth conduct of public events, such concerns should be addressed with sensitivity and discretion rather than through public reprimand (sic),” FWICE said.
It further stressed that conclusions about a performer’s condition should not be drawn without restraint, adding that any concerns regarding an artist’s well-being should be addressed with compassion and professionalism.
Describing Mehndi as a celebrated name in Indian music, FWICE said his songs and performances have earned recognition across generations. It said the public humiliation of a senior artist was “deeply distressing to the entire entertainment fraternity”.
The federation also emphasised that artists should be treated fairly and professionally, irrespective of their stature or circumstances.
“Public representatives and event organisers have a responsibility to ensure that any concerns regarding a performer’s health or performance are handled appropriately,” it said.
FWICE urged authorities to adopt greater sensitivity while dealing with artists and performers and reiterated its commitment to the welfare, professional rights and fair treatment of workers and artists.
The controversy erupted after Mehndi performed at the Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair in New Tehri on Sunday. During the performance, Uniyal interrupted the singer and alleged that he was under the influence of alcohol.
