The Tripura Students Forum Delhi has approached Delhi Police seeking an FIR and an urgent investigation into a viral social media video allegedly showing a person from Tripura being subjected to sexual assault, racial harassment and humiliating treatment by a content creator.
The development comes after Union Minister Kiren Rijiju raised the issue on social media. Meanwhile, Tripura Police are registering a case under relevant legal provisions, with further action to follow in accordance with the law.
In its formal complaint, the Tripura Students Forum Delhi (TSF’D) urged authorities to investigate the alleged incident and determine the legal provisions applicable after examining the video and other evidence.
The Forum alleged that the video contained racially derogatory expressions, including ‘Chinki’ and ‘Chiness’, directed at the individual. It said the alleged language raised serious concerns about racial prejudice, dignity and equal treatment.
The complaint also objected to derogatory references to Tripura, stating that the content had caused anguish among members of the state’s community and was perceived as an affront to its dignity and reputation.
The Forum requested an impartial investigation into the alleged assault, harassment and racial humiliation, along with efforts to establish the identity and role of the person operating the Instagram account and anyone who may have participated in or recorded the incident.
It also urged police to contact the affected individual through a safe and confidential process, record their statement sensitively and take steps to prevent further intimidation, harassment or unwanted public exposure.
The complaint called for the preservation of digital evidence, including the original recording, metadata, account details and upload history, through lawful procedures and appropriate requests to the social media platform.
The Forum further sought acknowledgement of its complaint and information about the action taken, subject to legal requirements and the individual’s privacy.
Separately, Delhi Police sources said the Special Police Unit for North-Eastern Region (SPUNER) had written to the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit, seeking an investigation into the viral video. The IFSO unit is expected to examine the material and investigate the matter further.
The allegations remain subject to investigation.
