New Zealand-designed ‘Sonic’ edge-detection technology will be used for the first time as part of the Decision Review System (DRS) during the upcoming multi-format series between India and New Zealand, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced on Thursday.
The approval applies to the forthcoming Black Caps-India series in New Zealand. Any future use of the technology will remain subject to the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) accreditation and approval processes.
With the addition of Sonic, Virtual Eye, which has held ICC accreditation for ball-tracking technology since 2008, will provide the complete suite of DRS technology for the tour. Sonic uses advanced audio analysis to help third umpires assess potential contact between bat and ball during reviews.
NZC said the approval followed extensive testing, validation and independent assessment conducted in consultation with the ICC, with support from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
“The integrity of decision-making is fundamental to the game, which is why such a comprehensive testing and assessment process has been undertaken. The technology has been subject to extensive validation and independent review, and we’re pleased with the outcome of that process. We’d like to thank the ICC, BCCI, Sky and Virtual Eye for their collaboration and commitment throughout,” NZC Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer Glenn Critchley said.
Virtual Eye Chief Executive Officer Ben Taylor said the team had worked extensively to develop and refine the technology, focusing on accuracy, consistency and meeting the standards required in international sport.
India’s tour of New Zealand begins on Thursday with a five-match T20 International series, followed by five One-Day Internationals and two Test matches. The second Test is scheduled to conclude on December 1.
