A 26-year-old man accused of murdering his pregnant wife six months ago was hacked to death in broad daylight by an unidentified assailant in Telangana’s Nizamabad town on Thursday, police said.
The victim, identified as Haribabu, was selling corn from a pushcart near Raja Rajendra crossroads when the attacker allegedly approached him and repeatedly struck him with a sickle. The assault, which took place in full public view, was captured on CCTV.
According to eyewitness accounts cited by police, three people were travelling in a car when one of them got out and attacked Haribabu. The assailant, who was apparently carrying a sickle used for cutting coconuts, attacked him while he was taking water from a roadside chat shop.
Haribabu was reportedly stabbed nine times within about 10 seconds and died at the spot. After the attack, the assailant returned to the car and fled.
Haribabu had been accused of murdering his 19-year-old wife, Vaishnavi, a YouTuber, on March 17. Police had alleged that he stabbed his four-month-pregnant wife multiple times over unmet dowry demands at their residence in Madhapur village of Korutla mandal in Jagtial district.
Vaishnavi and Haribabu had been in a relationship before marrying last year. The couple also jointly ran a YouTube channel, ‘Vaishu Amma’, which had more than 50,000 followers and nearly 200 videos.
Haribabu, who worked at a hospital in Korutla, allegedly fled after the murder and was subsequently arrested. He was released on bail recently and had moved to Nizamabad, where he was living with his mother and selling corn for a livelihood.
Police shifted his body to the Government General Hospital for postmortem examination.
A police officer said a case had been registered and an investigation launched. Investigators were examining CCTV footage to identify the assailant and establish the circumstances and motive behind the killing.
