The Punjab unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is launching four statewide ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatras’ from Friday as part of its campaign against drug abuse ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
The four yatras, which will collectively cover around 4,000 km and all 117 Assembly constituencies, will begin from different parts of the state between September 18 and 21 before converging in Jalandhar on September 30. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to address the concluding rally.
BJP national president Nitin Nabin will flag off the first yatra from Ekta Sthal at Madhopur in Pathankot district on Friday. The route will pass through constituencies across Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Kapurthala and Jalandhar before reaching Jalandhar Cantt.
The second yatra will begin on September 19 from Fatehgarh Sahib. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is scheduled to flag it off after paying obeisance at Gurdwara Sri Jyoti Saroop Sahib. The route will cover areas of Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Mohali, Ropar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr and Phagwara before concluding in Jalandhar.
The third yatra will start on September 20 from the Sadiki border in Fazilka, near the Asafwala 1971 War Memorial. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will flag it off. It will cover constituencies in Fazilka, Muktsar, Bathinda, Faridkot, Moga, Ludhiana and Malerkotla before reaching its destination.
The fourth yatra will begin on September 21 from Gurdwara Sri Damdama Sahib in Talwandi Sabo. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini are scheduled to flag it off. The route will pass through Bathinda, Mansa, Barnala, Sangrur and Patiala before heading towards Jalandhar.
The BJP has described the campaign as an effort to create awareness about drug abuse and mobilise public participation in the fight against addiction. Party leaders have also linked the campaign to concerns over law and order and corruption in Punjab.
The campaign has also triggered political exchanges in the state. The Aam Aadmi Party and Congress have questioned the BJP’s record and the Centre’s role in tackling drug trafficking and cross-border smuggling, while the BJP has criticised the Punjab government’s handling of the issue.
The four yatras are scheduled to culminate in Jalandhar on September 30, when Amit Shah will address a public rally.
