Two Pakistani Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists were killed in a joint counter-tererrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district, with the slain militants identified as Saddam and Mustafa, police said on Thursday.
Jammu and Kashmir Police identified the two men following the operation, named Operation Soan, in the Majalta area. The police said the operation remained underway as security forces continued searches in the area.
Police said arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain terrorists, including an AK assault rifle with four magazines, an M4 carbine with three magazines, a Glock pistol with two magazines and four grenades.
The operation was launched after suspicious movement was reported in the Majalta area on Wednesday evening. Security forces subsequently established a cordon and launched a search operation, during which contact with the suspected terrorists led to an exchange of fire.
Two terrorists were killed in the ensuing gunfight, while additional forces were deployed to reinforce the operation. The Army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police were involved in the search and surveillance operation.
The Army’s White Knight Corps said the joint intelligence-based operation was conducted during the intervening night of September 16 and 17 in the Brattal area of Udhampur. Despite difficult terrain, poor visibility and adverse weather conditions, the security forces carried out the counter-terrorism operation and killed two terrorists.
Search and surveillance operations continued in the area to determine whether any other terrorists remained in the vicinity. Security forces also intensified combing operations, including the use of surveillance assets, to sanitise the area.
The Udhampur operation comes amid increased security activity across the Pir Panjal region. The latest action follows the busting of an alleged overground worker network linked to the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in Rajouri.
On September 15, Rajouri Police arrested three people in connection with an alleged terror module operating in the Pir Panjal region. The accused were identified as Zakir Hussain, Mohd Azam and Mohd Mushtaq.
Security forces have maintained heightened vigilance across the Udhampur-Reasi range, including vehicle checking and tighter security cordons along strategic routes.
The hilly districts of Udhampur, Reasi, Ramban, Kathua, Poonch and Rajouri remain under heightened security focus because of reported movements of terrorists in the difficult-to-access forest and mountainous areas.
