Madhya Pradesh was illuminated by 3.55 crore ‘Ashirwad Diyas’ on Thursday as the state marked Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 76th birthday and launched the month-long ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’.
The main event was held in Ujjain, where 33.27 lakh diyas were lit simultaneously along the Shipra riverfront and at Mahakal Lok. Officials said the mass lighting set a world record.
The lighting began at 7 p.m. after a siren signalled participants to light the lamps simultaneously. More than 25,000 volunteers, devotees and residents took part at Ramghat, Datt Akhada, Kedareshwar, Sunhari and Bhookhi Mata ghats, besides Mahakal Lok.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, state BJP president Hemant Khandelwal and state in-charge Mahendra Singh joined the ceremony at Ramghat. The leaders also participated in the Shipra Aarti and offered prayers for the happiness and prosperity of the people of Madhya Pradesh.
The mass illumination transformed the Shipra riverfront into a sea of lights, stretching from the ghats towards Mahakal Lok. Volunteers also created an image of Prime Minister Modi using lamps at the Kartik Mela ground, according to reports.
Yadav said the lamp-lighting symbolised public affection, respect and gratitude for Modi’s 25 years of public service and contribution to nation-building.
He said the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’ would seek to extend the spirit of service and public participation across Madhya Pradesh through activities focused on public welfare and social participation.
The ‘Ashirwad Diya’ programme was simultaneously organised at 845 iconic locations across the state, with 3.55 crore lamps lit in total, according to officials and the state BJP.
Before the Ujjain programme, Nabin and Yadav launched the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’ in Indore. The statewide initiative is scheduled to continue for a month.
