A young woman working as a Women Supervisor in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district was allegedly hacked to death with a sharp-edged weapon at her rented accommodation in Chakradharpur on Thursday afternoon, police said.
The victim was identified as Anita Bind, who was posted as a Women Supervisor in Sonua block. Originally from Uttar Pradesh, she had been staying as a tenant at Sheetla Mandir Gwala Patti in Ward No. 7 of Chakradharpur for around 15 days.
According to police, a man identified as Anil Kumar Bind arrived at Anita’s residence at around 2 p.m. to meet her. Shortly afterwards, neighbours heard screams coming from the upper floor of the building.
The man was allegedly seen fleeing the premises soon after, prompting local residents to chase him. He was subsequently apprehended and handed over to the police.
When neighbours entered the room, they found Anita lying in a pool of blood with multiple injuries caused by a sharp weapon. Police reached the spot and rushed her to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Police have taken Anil Kumar Bind into custody and are questioning him. During preliminary questioning, he reportedly claimed that he was in a relationship with the victim.
Both Anita and the detained man are believed to be natives of Uttar Pradesh, according to the preliminary investigation.
Police are probing the motive behind the killing and searching for the weapon allegedly used in the attack. Investigators are also examining the nature of the relationship between the victim and the accused.
The victim’s body has been sent to the Sub-Divisional Hospital for post-mortem examination. Police said forensic evidence collected from the crime scene and the post-mortem report would help establish the circumstances and exact cause of death.
The investigation is underway.
